Hesetout,aged17,withhisfatherNicoloandhisuncleMaffeoontheirgreatjourneyto
China.TheysailedsouthfromVenice,ItalyandstoppedoffintheMiddleEast.Theyoften
caiTiedonoverlandtoPersia(nowIran),throughthePamirMountainsandtheGobiDesert
beforetheygottoBeijing,China.Atthattime,ChinawasmoreadvancedthanEurope.They
alreadyhadpaper,solargenumbersofbookswereavailable.Theyalsousedpapermoneyin
manypartsofthecountry.
AfterhegotbacktoItaly,MarcoPolotalkedabouthisexperiencesinChina,andhewrotea
bookdescribingtherichesofAsia.Hisbookwasthefirstwesternrecordofporcelain(瓷器),coal,

JacquesCousteau
JacquesCousteauwasaFrenchunderseaexplorer,environmentalistandinventor.Hewas
borninFrancein1910.Whenhewasyoung,hewasattractedbythesea,machinesand
film-making.IntheFrenchnavy,Cousteaubeganexploringunderwaterandworkedonaspecial
breathingmachinewhichalloweddiverstostayunderwaterforseveralhours.Thisgavethem
timetoreallylookaroundundertheocean.In1948,Cousteaubegantravellingtheworld'soceans
inhisresearchshipCalypso.Cousteauproducedmanyfilmsandbooksabouthisunderwater
experiences,includingtheTVseriesTheUnderwaterWorldofJacquesCousteau,which
introducedthepublictotheworldofsharks,whales,dolphinsandtreasure.
CousteaustartedtheCousteauSocietytoprotectoceanlife.In1989,hereceivedagreat
honour:hewasmadeamemberoftheFrenchAcademy.Finally,afteralongandvariedlife,

Baileysawthestudentsasfutureleaders,shewasdesperatetoexposethemtotheUN,itsmission,
